Pike County was created on December 17, 1821. The county boundaries changed several times before being set at their current locations in 1866. The county was named for General Zebulon Pike, a soldier in the War of 1812.

The first county seat was established at Louisville, later moved to Monticello and finally located in Troy in 1839.
  
Pike County is located in the southeastern section
of the state, in the coastal plain or "wiregrass" area.  
  
For the historically minded there's the Troy historic district: one of the oldest sections of the city with some 13 antebellum homes and a beautifully restored downtown square.

     
Pike Pioneer Museum is located on 15 acres of
beautiful wooded land on highway 231 north of Troy. Here is the last frontier east of the Mississippi River: a place where you can see the way pioneer people lived more than a century ago.
